After more than 10 years of planning, a massive new Brackendale development is becoming much closer to fruition.
The District of Squamish has recently granted approvals for a 1,215 unit master planned community, to be developed by Sqomish Sea To Sky Developments LP; a partnership between Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation) and developer Matthews West, who is also responsible for Oceanfront Squamish.
The residential portion of the proposed development includes 508 condos, 537 single family homes and 170 rental units (50% market, 50% affordable). The development will also have a commercial component including a child care facility, with the possibility for community care, assisted living facilities, and school uses on the land. There will be ample greenspace throughout the development, including a publicly accessible trail network within the strata portion and planned expansion of the existing Ray Peters Trail network.
The developer has also committed to build an $89 million debris flow barrier, to mitigate potential risk imposed by the nearby Cheekeye River. This 24 metre high, 200 metre long concrete structure will reportedly be among the largest of it's type in the world.
